The Benefit of a Tune-Up by Brenda Williams

Many drivers are not informed about the necessary and preventative care that should come with vehicle ownership. Did you know that a regular tune up helps to prevent the vehicle from rusting, increase gas mileage and keep your family safe? Regardless of how busy your life gets, it is crucial that we maintain good technique when taking care of our vehicles. For this reason, it is crucial that we develop good habits like regular oil changes and regular tune-ups for our vehicles.

How often should you get a tune up? Most vehicle experts recommend that a tune up be completed at least once a year. Of course, other times when the vehicle is given attention can shed light on problems, such as, when the vehicle is in for an oil change every 5,000 kilometers but a tune-up gives the vehicle mechanic a chance to examine the engine, the overall working of the vehicle, and, flush any fluids that are required to make the vehicle ride smooth and like new.

What exactly does a tune up cover when you take your vehicle into the shop? What does the mechanic look for? When you take your vehicle into the mechanic, he or she will have a look at the following aspects:

1. Fluids. When you take your vehicle into the mechanic for a tune up it is a chance to flush any fluids from the vehicle that are old and require changing. Did you know that old fluids become harmful to your vehicle and can cause the vehicle to run poorly? Many fluids in the vehicle run through the entire engine, isn't it time that we made sure that these fluids were safe? Changing these fluids will mean that the engine will run at full capacity, increasing fuel mileage and reducing emissions.

2. Battery. The mechanic will test the battery within the vehicle to ensure that it is running, and charging properly. Many vehicle experts take the time to examine the outside of the battery and clean the terminals in which the battery attaches to the vehicle. Cleaning and checking the battery can assist in creating a longer lifetime. If a new battery is required, this can be determined with proper testing. Most batteries are relatively cheap and can be easily changed at home, without the use of a mechanic. Having a battery that no longer holds its charge could mean becoming stranded on that cold winter day.

3. Wheels are an important part of the vehicle. Did you know that tires are an essential part of vehicle safety and the running of the vehicle? Tires range in price from low to high, depending on the type chosen for the vehicle.

4. Brakes are examined during routine vehicle tune-ups, as this component stops the vehicle from moving it is essential that they are in working order. Replacing parts of or the entire system is completed on an annual basis to ensure that the brakes are in good working order.

Now you are aware of all of the components which are checked when bringing the vehicle in for a tune up. Often, a report will be given about the state of the vehicle and what has been checked. Follow up on any concerns with the mechanic and ensure that a good check up of the vehicle has been completed.

6 Great Tips On How To Save Money And Help Protect The Environment While Driving Your Vehicle by Ariston P Awitan,M.D.

With our economic down turn condition of our country these days, everybody wants to save money including truck and car drivers .It was just few months ago that the price oif gasoline was high. The price has come don some during the past few months, but I believe this reduction in price is only short-lived. We are still dependent on the foreign oil tor our fuel needs.

One particular issue today is the concern of pollution of the environment. The toxic emissions thast come our from the tail pipes of trucs and cars are a big factor in the environment pollution. So how can we car driviers and truck drivers help?

There several ways to help protect the environment and save money while driving your car or truck. These ways are discussed in this article including pointers in selecting fuel additive products.

It has been estimated by experts that emissions from cars and trucks are responsible for 30 percent of the pollution of planet Earth. So you can say that it is a civic duty of everyone to help protect the environment.

There are several attempts by people concerned about cleaning the environment. Some car manufacturers are starting to develop electric cars to try to solve the pollution problem.

Some companies are trying to promote their respective fuel additive products. Some are good, some are not proven by testing agencies. Some credible testing agencies have tested and recommended a fuel additive product.

What I want to discuss in this article pertains to a car or truck driver, how he can help reduce the toxic emissions that comes out from the tail pipe of his car or truck. There are several ways that a car or truck driver can do to help reduce emissions.

1. Properly Inflated Tires. This can improve gas mileage by up to 3 percent. Consider this: if you drive15,000 miles a year and get 25 miles per gallon. A 3 percent improvement will save about 17.5 gallons of gasoline, which at $4.00 a gallon is $70.00. Of course the gain means less oil consumed and fewer greenhouse gas emitted.

2. Tune Up. It is known that tune up can improve mileage by 4 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy

3. Replacing.Clogged Air Filter. This can raise fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent.

4. Driving 65 miles per hour instead of 75 mph..can improve fuel economy by up to 15 percent

5. The Use of Fuel Additive. There are fuel additives available today that has been proven to decrease emissions from 30 to 50 percent and to increase mileage 10 to 20 percent. These products can save you from 10 to 20% from your fuel bill.

6. In selecting a fuel additive, be sure that is is marketed by a company with good credibility and the products has been proven by reliable testing agencies.

The solution of the pollution problem does not only concern us today. It also concerns our children and our children's children. The air we breath when it is polluted is a source of those so-called free-radicals that are bad for our health because they destroy the cells of our bodies. This is the theory of some researchers and some studies are still trying to prove that these free radicals cause cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, and even cancer in our bodies.

So it is everyone's civic duty to help clean the environment and anything that we can do to reduce or eliminate tail pipe toxic emissions is a welcomed effort.

Vespa Scooters-A Greener Alternative to the Rolls Royce by Marek Kamella

Vespa scooters possess an air of elegance and stylish design not usually associated with motor bikes/scooters.

Built with the typical Italian eye for design, Vespa scooters rolled off the production line in the 1940's as an alternative to the motor bike. The Vespa had it's main mechanical parts shielded from the rider by a metal casing. This allowed the rider to enjoy a dirt free ride and proved to be very popular in Italy where Italians always have a desire to look elegant and stylish under any circumstances.

As a consequence, Italians were able to zip round post war Italy on their Vespa scooters smartly dressed and probably wearing their Raybans with a cigarette hanging from the corner of their mouths.

The "Vespa look" was tailor made for the silver screen and before too long the Vespa started appearing in Italian movies such as Fellini's La Dolce Vita.

Hollywood soon followed and Vespa scooters appeared in a number of high profile movies such as An American in Paris, The Conversation and American Graffiti. The Vespa played a prominent role in the British movie Quadrophenia which sparked a new craze for the Vespa in the U.K.

Many of the world's top movie stars rode around on Vespa scooters. Charlie Chaplin, Ursula Andress and Louis Armstrong all owned a Vespa. More recently the Vespa is favoured by Jamie Oliver, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke was even arrested for drink driving whilst on his Vespa !

2008 is proving to be a particularly successful year for Vespa scooters as it benefits from the rising popularity of scooters across the globe. Scooters are far more economical than cars, able to deliver between 70 - 120 miles to the gallon (an average family car would probably reach 40 miles to the gallon) ! In today's climate of volatile oil prices then it's not difficult to see why scooters are considered the greener alternative for the city commuter.

In London, scooters are also exempt from the congestion charge and cost less to put on the road than motor cars. If you work in the city then a scooter could be the answer to your commuting problems.

And with inner city driving then a scooter is an ideal way to get to work. No more wasted hours queuing in traffic jams and that wonderful feeling of satisfaction as you overtake all the standing cars to get to the front of the traffic queue.

The smaller sized Vespa's come in 50 cc and 125 cc categories and the minimum age to ride one is 16 years old and 17 years old respectively.

Anything above that and you are looking at a "motorcycle class" licence i.e. 150 cc upwards. Unlike 50 cc scooters which are factory restricted to a top speed of 30 miles per hour the more powerful scooters such as a 150 cc or a 250 cc perform at the same levels as a motorbike.

With motorists being taxed off the road in recent years then a scooter makes a very sensible alternative even if only used for commuting. If you are tempted with scooters then Vespas are believed to be the "Rolls Royce" of scooters and with Vespa accessories such as goggles and Vespa style open faced helmets on the market you will also be the coolest cat in town.

Basic Engine Care For Cars This Winter by Kimberlie Hutson

Copyright (c) 2008 Kimberlie Hutson

Winter isn't the nicest season to be driving in; it requires extra diligence and even the most experienced drivers can find themselves in some scary situations. However, it doesn't matter how safer driver you are, if your car isn't in top condition you're putting yourself and others at risk.

Before you set off in the morning make sure your car is clear of any ice, clearing a small patch in the windscreen in front of the drivers' seat is not going to be sufficient, or legal, you need to make sure all your windows and mirrors are clear. The most effective way to remove ice from your windscreen is going to be a good old-fashioned ice scrapper and can of deicer. Don't be tempted to pour hot water over your windscreen; this could result in you cracking your windscreen. Don't be tempted to improvise an ice scrapper either. Your credit card and CD's were never designed to clear your windows, at best they will just scratch your windows which you may not notice until you're driving into a low winter sun and the glare is almost blinding you. It is much cheaper and easier to buy an ice scrapper and can of deicer than to replace your entire windscreen. If your car is going to be parked all day at work and there's a chance it could freeze up again, make sure you have a spare can of deicer in your car.

If, when you drive off, you can hear a high pitched squealing noise there's a good chance that your water pump and/or cylinder block is frozen, this is not safe and if possible, you should stop the car and wait until they've defrosted.

Anti freeze should be added to the radiator and screen wash. Typically anti freeze won't freeze until it reaches temperatures below -40 degrees Celsius (with a 40/60 ratio). When water freezes it expands and this could result in your engine cracking, also, anti freeze contains corrosion inhibiting compounds, which will also benefit your engine. Antifreeze should ideally be replaced every two years to ensure it's able to do its job as effectively as possible.

Make sure the engine oil is comfortably between the minimum and maximum mark on the dipstick, check this when the engine is cold and the car is flat. Now you're confident your engine is safe, check out your tyres. If you're going to be driving in icy conditions you're going want to know you're as safe as possible. If tyres are over inflated they are going to have less grip on the road (under inflated tyres are going to increase fuel consumption so always consult your manufacturers hand book). It is illegal to drive with tyres with less than 1.6mm tread and it's illegal for a reason, if you don't have enough tread on your tyres you reduce your risk of being able to stop safely when you break. If caught, you could face a fine and points on your licence (which is nothing compared to the prison sentence that comes with a death by dangerous driving conviction). If you're not sure if your tyres have enough tread and you don't happen to have a ruler on you, you can check the little bars molded into the tyres, if they have worn down to these bars they need to be replaced, if your still not sure, replace them anyway, its better to be safe than sorry!

If your car starts to make any noises which it shouldn't, it is best to have a qualified mechanic look at it. This is not ideal weather to be waiting for your breakdown service to rescue you in.

Want to Save at the Pump? Try Stopping Smart by Mike Trudel, Freelance Writer

According to several reputable studies, up to thirty percent of a typical gasoline car engine's output is lost during braking in everyday city driving situations. Believe it or not, this simple principle is one of the primary reasons gas mileage on the highway is so much higher: less braking.

Most cars' braking systems depend on friction, applied on metal drums or disks, to stop the rotation of the wheels. All the kinetic energy built up during driving, then, is abruptly halted through this friction and converted to useless heat, as the vehicle cannot employ that energy for forward propulsion. One important advantage of hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) is that they use regenerative braking. This, in turn, helps to provide better fuel economy. Waiting lists are getting longer and longer for the most popular HEV models as gas prices rise. Such high demand surpassing customarily high supply is a feat for the automotive industry, which usually has a standard 100-day reserve of any given vehicle, according to a popular news magazine.

Regenerative braking is the process of reducing a vehicle's speed by converting some of its kinetic energy into another useful form. In many HEVs, the electric motor is used to create torque to drive the wheels and may often be designed to closely resemble electric generators. The HEV engine, then, can either use electricity to create torque or vice versa. Rather than creating friction and useless heat to slow the vehicle, it reverses the electric motor -- essentially turning it into an electric generator. This process generates electricity, which is then fed and stored into a battery to be used once the car starts moving. Every time an HEV slows down, reduces acceleration or uses its brakes, energy can be stored.

The shift from losing energy during braking to packing it away may seem minor to the average consumer, but it is an essential element in creating the hybrid engine's ability for better fuel economy. So is its ability to actually turn itself off at idle and then quickly -- smoothly -- restart once the accelerator is pressed.

Stop/start technology conserves energy by shutting off the gasoline engine when the vehicle is at idle. This is difficult to imagine for those who, for their entire driving lives, have been accustomed to a vehicle only starting through the use of a key. This, however, is precisely what happens. The engine automatically re-starts when the driver pushes the gas pedal to go forward and continues on just as smoothly as a traditional gasoline engine would. This, too, saves on fuel.

Of course, specialized equipment is needed to incorporate such technology. An integrated starter generator system, which includes more than just a smart braking system, is a good beginning. The best will have a crankshaft-mounted starter generator, traction inverter, DC/DC converter, controllers and a battery pack. It will also provide quick, quiet stop/start, regenerative braking, torque smoothing, high power generation, launch-assist to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and battery management to increase battery life.

There's more, of course, for the savvy. Such systems can also provide on-board electrical power generation, which will create a smoother ride and efficient on-board power production. Integrated power electronics and controllers will give the consumer a traction inverter, DC/DC converter motor, an energy controller, Control Area Network (CAN) communications and 5 to 10 kilowatts of on-board electrical power, enabling customer features. The engine on such models can also start five times faster than its conventional counterparts, and a liquid cooling element allows the elimination of a second coolant loop in some applications.

Pretty fancy, eh?

So you thought fuel economy was all about smaller cars, the latest and greatest engines and race car technology? While these all help, fuel economy is also about using brake energy more efficiently. Using "stop smart" technology just might save the impact on your wallet.
